24 अक्‍टूबर 1998 को तत्‍कालीन प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी ने स्‍वर्णिम चतुर्भुज राजमार्ग परियोजना की घोषणा की थी, जिसे उस समय की दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी हाईवे परियोजना माना जाता है। 5846 कि.मी. का स्वर्णिम चतुर्भुज (जीक्यू) राजमार्ग मूल रूप से राजमार्गों का एक नेटवर्क है, जो देश के चार प्रमुख महानगरों को चार दिशाओं – दिल्ली (उत्तर), चेन्नई (दक्षिण), कोलकाता (पूर्व) और मुंबई (पश्चिम) में जोड़ता है – जिससे एक चतुर्भुज बन जाता है और इसीलिए इसका नाम गोल्डन क्वाड्रिलेटरल (स्वर्णिम चतुर्भुज) है। 2001 में हुई शुरू  इस महत्वाकांक्षी परियोजना का निर्माण कार्य आधिकारिक तौर पर 2001 में शुरू हुआ। इसके 2006 तक पूरा होने का अनुमान था, परन्तु यह वास्तव में जनवरी  2012  में पूरी हुई। स्वर्णिम चतुर्भुज परियोजना में नए एक्सप्रेस हाईवे का निर्माण शामिल है, जिसमें मौजूदा राजमार्गों के नवीनीकरण के लिए चार या छह लेन का विस्तार और मरम्मत शामिल है। परियोजना से जुड़े प्रमुख शहर स्वर्णिम चतुर्भुज भारत के प्रमुख शहरों के बीच कुशल परिवहन लिंक प्रदान करता है जैसे नई दिल्ली; जयपुर, उदयपुर, ...
