FOR almost more than 15 years, there is hue and cry over subsidy provided to the citizens of India. Is it true that subsidy on various commodities a burden on Government of India? This subsidy drama needs a serious debate with open heart without any hidden agenda that is it an unnecessary burden on our economy or somewhat?
Actually till about two decades back, politics was a social service and elected public representatives were not so greedy. Till than their motto to social service was “Service to Almighty” as many social service organizations say, “Manav seva hi Ishwar sewa hai”. But in today’s world politics has become a money-minting business.
Actually subsidy is not a burden to government, the burden is day to day increasing incentives to the public representatives from a corporator to member of Parliament and Rajya Sabha.

So what Montok Singh Ahluwaliya had said some months back that “Rs 32 is enough for one day meal”, was not wrong. Our MPs, whichever party they may belong, all are involved in this game . They are unaware of the fact that how a salaried person had to run his/her family. At these rates nobody could dine even at a roadside dhaba.
There was a time when every individual used to wait Budget but the today’s politicians have lost the importance of the budget. Except gold and silver, the prices of other commodities were raised under compulsion. But today every other day prices are increased. If our politicians have to adopt this policy then why budget is presented and perhaps my politician friends must be aware of the fact that how much public exchequer is wasted during budget session. Present the budget like a corporate files his returns. At least that money could be saved that is wasted in the name of budget session of the Parliament.
Thirdly, why subsidy is supposed a burden? See how much money is wasted on the advertisement on mid-day meal. This midday meal is not new it is more than five decades old. When I was in primary section in MCD school at Bhojla Pahari, I had milk every day after recess. In those days, milk was distributed in below poverty localities.
Then with the change of time, in 1967, when Jana Sangh came in power in Metropolitan Council, now Delhi Assembly, and in MCD they change the menu into bread. Being one of the active social worker, I had distributed perhaps more than 300 bread of Modern Bread Co., four pieces of sweet bread per head to below the povertyline families at Gali Raja Kedar Nath, Chawri Bazar, Delhi. I mean to say that no publicity was there.
Fourthly, how much telephone calls, electricity, free air trips, water is free to them all, are they all kings or public representatives to do social service, all these are the extra burden on public purse.
Fifth, how much of tax payers money is spend on their security, has any body tried to calculate the burden on government treasury?
Sixth, how much money is spend on a Parliamentary constituency in a year? See and calculate: four MLAs, about 15/16 corporators come under a Member of Parliament, even then the condition of roads is like a open book. The voter knows what work is under whose jurisdiction but extra money is wasted on sign boards that “this work is under process from the funds of such and such member”. And just after ¾ months the same road is uprooted.
Seventh, see below the handsome emoluments of a member of parliament:--

1. The Salary
Salary: Rs. 50,000/- per month
Daily Allowance: Rs. 2,000/- per day when the MP attends Parliament sessions
2. The Travel
An MP is allowed 34 free air journeys in a year with his/her spouse or any number of companions or relatives.
The spouse/companion can travel alone eight times in a year to meet the member.
By just showing the Identity Card, he/she can travel at any time by any railway in India in first class air-conditioned or executive class. While travelling outside of India, the MP is given free First Class air/rail tickets.... more
3. The House and Telephone
An MP is entitled to have three telephones without payment of installation and rental charges
While in office a Member is allotted a flat without having to pay the licence fee. He/She also gets 50,000 units of electricity and 4,000 KL of water per year.
4. The Medical Facilities
Under the Central Government Health Scheme, the MP and his/her family gets free medical treatment on a monthly contribution of Rs. 500/-.
5. The Constituency Allowance
Every MP gets Rs 45,000 as their Constituency Allowance.
6. The Office Expense Allowance
Every month, Rs 45,000 is allotted to an MP, of which 15,000 is meant for stationery and the rest is for secretarial assistance.
7. The pension
If a person has served as an MP, he/she is entitled to Rs 20,000 per month as pension. If the person has served for more than five years, then he/she gets an additional 1,500/- per month

Can any body dare to question the government that as to why so many taxes on patrol are imposed? Patrol is sold at much higher price in India than any other country in the world.
Last but not the least that to beat chest over the burden of subsidy is just a drama. Now with rise in diesel and LPG prices, except Congress every party is on roads to criticize the rise but will not utter a single word that if such and such facility is reduced public will not be burdened. The question is who will bell the cat?
