It has been 65 years of Indian independence, a moment to be proud of. And women have come a long way. What started off as a small step is a big leap now. While two women Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal made the country proud at Olympics 2012, women have definitely made a mark over the years. India has slowly formed itself as a country with growing women power.
Gone are the days of associating India with snake charmers and myths. As the nation is celebrating 65 years of freedom, it's also time to reminisce the progress made by the women so far.
The country saw its first woman President in Pratibha Patil. India can now boast that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is a woman. Further, there are two prominent female chief ministers currently with outstanding capacity for good administration. Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the ruling party at the Centre is also a woman.
So how do the women really fare in India? Are they still a target of the patriarchal society? Women in India have out stepped the boundaries set for them by the patriarchal society. Their fight is against oppression, exploitation and deprivation.
The awareness is steadily increasing among women because of the rise in the female literacy rate in the country, which rose from 53.25 percent in 2009 to 73.86 percent in 2010. Women are now able to compete impersonally in the society as men do. They no longer need to compete for supremacy in their home with their husband, and in the society for status.
A new transformational level has been guaranteed for the women. Today more job opportunities are open to women. Even in the army, women are recruited as commissioned officers and are being sent to the ground.
In the villages women are more organized in their hunt for employment and fight against domestic violence. In the cities, though sexual harassment is brought to notice, women have taken a stand for themselves.
India has come a long way and today the number of schools and colleges meant especially for women has also increased. Domestic violence has seen a decline too and only very few stray incidents occur.
The country sees young women joining the campaigns for literacy; fight against dowry system, and against injustice and also against the label that is put against them when they try to step out of their boundary set by the patriarchal society.
Women not only hold top positions in the corporate set up today, but also are achieving a lot in various other fields like sports, etc. As the country has progressed over the years so has the way the society looks at women.
It is seen that 50 of the 100 women convicts lodged in Tihar Prisons have been granted remission on the occasion of this Independence Day.
Sunita Williams, an Indian-American astronaut who is currently on her second space mission, is another example of how far women have progressed. She holds the record of the longest space flight (195 days) among female space travelers. We hope that with the years to come India sees women climb the ladder of success further.
