Delhi election: AAP is down but not out

Emboldened by the show of strength at its first public rally since the Lok Sabha elections at Jantar Mantar on August 3, the Aam Admi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal has instructed volunteers to prepare for a December election. On the mend since its disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha polls where it drew a blank in Delhi despite its dream debut in the assembly polls, the party is desperate for a come-back in Delhi. Kejriwal has announced that the party will launch a door-to-door campaign from Wednesday (August 13) to build public pressure on the Centre to dissolve the assembly and hold elections in the Capital. AAP, however, seems keen on raising hell over the political impasse in the Capital hoping to capitalise on the backlash against the BJP for the power and water crisis and is expecting to see a further drift of votes from the Congress to itself. But political commentators feel AAP may not be able to pull off a repeat of its December 2013 performance.Delhi has be...

Women stoned to death in Syria for adultery

BEIRUT (AP) — A cleric read the verdict before the truck came and dumped a large pile of stones near the municipal garden. Jihadi fighters then brought in the woman, clad head to toe in black, and put her in a small hole in the ground. When residents gathered, the fighters told them to carry out the sentence: Stoning to death for the alleged adulteress. None in the crowd stepped forward, said a witness to the event in a northern Syrian city. So the jihadi fighters, mostly foreign extremists, did it themselves, pelting Faddah Ahmad with stones until her body was dragged away. "Even when she was hit with stones she did not scream or move," said an opposition activist who said he witnessed the stoning near the football stadium and the Bajaa garden in the city of Raqqa, the main Syrian stronghold of the Islamic State group. The July 18 stoning was the second in a span of 24 hours. A day earlier, 26-year-old Shamseh Abdullah was killed in a similar way in the ne...

The MP was quoted by CNN IBN a saying, "There were incidents that took place in Mumbai at Azad Maidan where police people were beaten up but the Congress never spoke on that issue. " "They also did not speak up when Kashmiri Pandits were displaced from their homes. They are working on 'Pakistan agenda'." The discussion of the Bill was an unpleasant mud-slinging exercise in the Lok Sabha with the Congress accusing the ruling BJP of  'polarising voters'. Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, said there was an attempt to polarise voters in states an...

DON'T MISS 1 - 6 of 7 Should You Keep Using Your Colgate Total Toothpaste?

By Katie Jennings Getty/ Scott Olson Colgate Total toothpaste contains an antibacterial ingredient called triclosan. As we recently reported , a Bloomberg News story raised concerns over the potentially harmful effects of the chemical. While long-term research in humans is lacking, several studies of the effects of triclosan in mice and rats found adverse health effects at high concentrations, including reduced fertility and increased cancer risk . But it's difficult to say if these results would translate into humans, especially because we've been exposed to triclosan in various products for decades. Recent headlines with phrases like " cancer-causing chemical " or " cancer-linked ingredient " are overhyped and fail to account for this. And while any link with cancer probably sounds scary, it's important to keep in mind that the compound is in the toothpaste for a reason: It helps fight gingivitis, a common di...

The controversial leader was caught on camera calling SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav a ‘hijra’ for not doing enough for the development of Uttar Pradesh. Yahoo India NEW DELHI: Already under fire for his alleged role in the recent communal riots in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan may land himself in more trouble for his verbal tirade against party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. Addressing a gathering at his constituency, Rampur, the controversial Samajwadi Party leader was caught on camera calling Mulayam Singh Yadav a ‘hijra’ (a eunuch, or a pejorative term to denote impotence) for not doing enough for the development of many constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Azam Khan also said that Rampur developed because of him and not because of Mulayam Singh Yadav. He dismissed claims of Mulayam Singh Yadav being the force behind Rampur's development, saying if it was the SP supremo behind the progress of his constituency then why did he prove such a d...

Azad Maidan riot : Will this treachery go unpunished?

Shravan Krushnapaksha 1, Kaliyug Varsha 5116 On the occasion of two years being completed since the riot by fanatics on Azad Maidan in Mumbai What happened to the violence caused by Raza Academy under the pretext of Fanatic gathering 2 years ago on 11th August ? What happened to the injured police and the lady constable attacked by the fanatics on that day there ? What punishment has been given to those responsible for this kind of unpardonable act ? What punishment has been given to those who were instrumental in preconceiving this riot ? Were all participating in the said riot have been put behind the bar ? Are they punished ? All these questions have remained unanswered. 1. Understand the mentality of kicking and destroying the Monument of Amar Jawan ! It is said that public memory is short; but it is not so with everyone. Where are those intellectuals forgetting Godhra but making furore over Gujarat riots still ? Why the media shouting in the name o...

Fatwas are not law. The Indian Constitution is supreme and more important than all. - Syed Bhai of the Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal With a change of government at the Centre, progressive Muslim organisations are hoping that regressive, anti-women laws will be replaced with those based on gender parity. Syed Bhai of the Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal, which has worked for eradicating social evils like oral, one-sided talaq, nikah halala (wherein a woman divorced by her husband has to marry another man and consummate the marriage before she is divorced by him and can return to her first husband) and fundamentalism, said they were planning to meet prime minister Narendra Modi with like-minded organisations to petition him on legal reform. Syed Bhai spoke to DNA's Dhaval Kulkarni about his expectations from the meeting.  What are your expectations from the Centre regarding change in Muslim personal laws? We hope that laws which are biased against women are changed and meas...
