Bangalore: When politics becomes a family affair, the masses find it hard to invest their trust and aspirations in such political set up. In India politics is almost a family affair, like in case of Nehru-Gandhi regime which has dominated the Congress party since independence. Such interconnections have worked in many places for the people in India but then there are those who have used and abused the power they are entitled to for their personal advantage. Here are the four political controversies which shook many of the well established political reigns in recent past in India, as listed by rediff.com
The Chautalas
The Haryana chief minister, Om Prakash Chautala has served the post four times; however his tenure has ranged from six days to six years. In 1991, he was publicly disowned by his father, late Chaudhary Devi Lal who was a freedom fighter and who also served as the chief minister of Haryana, for allegedly smuggling gold watches worth Rs 100,000 at the Delhi airport.
When Chautala was the CM, he was accused of protecting SPS Rathore in the Ruchika Girotra molestation case. His sons, Ajay Singh and Abhay Chautala were accused for scams involved in recruiting over 3,000 teachers illegally and controversial election as the Indian Boxing Federation and the Olympic Association president respectively.
This year Om Prakash Chautala was convicted by a Delhi court for illegal recruitment of over 3000 teachers, along with his son Ajay Singh.
Owaisi is the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen leader who is known for the controversial stir ups by his hate-speeches. Belonging to influential Owaisi family, Akbaruddin is the floor leader of his party in the Andhra Pradesh assembly. Akbaruddin has constantly alleged in his speeches that the Indian state had 'abandoned' the Muslims to their fate.
His elder brother, MP Asaduddin, has equally been part of fiery speeches both inside and outside Parliament. In December 2012, Akbaruddin said at a public meeting in Adilabad that the 250 million Muslims of India needed only 15 minutes without the police to show one billion Hindus of India who is more powerful.
This led to the arrest of Owaisi brothers recently under sections 153-A for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, section 147 for rioting, section 186 for obstructing public servant while discharging duties and seven other sections of the Indian penal Code.
Jagan Mohan Reddy
YS Jaganmohan Reddy launched the YSR Congress party after his father YS Rajashekhar Reddy's death, which won the by-elections in Andhra Pradesh in 2011.
Last year Jagan Mohan Reddy was arrested for embezzlement by the CBI. He was charged on the grounds of Sections 120-B for criminal conspiracy, 420 for cheating, 409 for criminal breach of trust and 477A for falsification of accounts of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
In the second charge sheet filed by the CBI it stated that Jagan and his father the former CM of Andhra Pradesh 'adopted several ingenious ways to amass illegal wealth which resulted in great public injury' and at the cost of public fund, allegedly by abusing the office of the chief minister’, as reported by rediff.com
Through court proceedings the CBI is trying to prove that Jagan with an associate had fraudulently obtained an illegal gain of Rs 34,65,99,830.
Currently, the wealthiest politician in India is spending his luxurious days in jail, after many of his bail pleas were denied by the Supreme Court.

Reddy BrothersThe story of G Janardhan Reddy is nothing less than rags to riches, born as the youngest of the three sons of a police constable, he rose to power with his crooked ways that he found easy to march. He got the limelight during the Lok Sabha elections in 1999, when he and his brother worked for senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. Sushma lost the election against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Bellary that year.
As per Tehelka, the Reddy family spent an estimated Rs 20 crore on a wedding in March 2009. The family owned a helicopter that ferried over 10,000 guests to the wedding. A month later, Rs 42 crore diamond-studded crown was donated by the brothers to a temple deity. Further, the first lease for an iron mine was obtained by the Reddy brothers in 2004. The soaring commodity prices and massive demand for iron ore in China, led to their sudden growth.
Accused for illegal mining and export of iron ore in Bellary and Anantapur, Janardhan was arrested in September 2011. He is currently roosting in the Hyderabad's Chanchagunda Jail and he has expressed his desirers to contest for the coming assembly polls in Karnataka.
Political controversies and scams aren’t new in India, what’s new is now scams can lead to ousting leaders from their position of power. These days the accused when found guilty are jailed, which shakes their public images, outing them from the game, or leaving with very little hope to be back with the same swagger like before.
