A warm kiss (lips) between Bicon chief Kiran Majumdar and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje on November 29,2006, refreshing many old memories of kissing in the mind. They are either from political or film fields. Kiss has always been in hot-news.
If you have done some thing good, media will not highlight, no reporter or a cameraman will run or interview him or her. So perhaps since times immemorial media runs before such baseless news not towards nation-building news. Though it is called the mirror of the society as well as of the nation but just to have their meal the attention is diverted from the their motive of the media, established for. And it proved time and again.
During 1950s, a very hot kiss between Devika Rani and Himanshu Roy was in the new for a long time; then perhaps in the beginning of 1960 when Queen Elizabeth visited India, then Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru while receiving her at the airport had Kissed her hand, bending his knees up and down.
In 1970s, during the Non-alignment Summit in New Delhi at Vgyan Bhawan Fedro Castro had hugged then Indian Prime Minister Smt Indira Gandhi at the stage, the programme was live on TV, moreso, while he was taking round in that position the legs of Smt Gandhi were in the air; then the Kiss of Master Rishi Kapoor by the semi-nude Simi Grewal in the buds and of a Russian actress by Raj Kapoor in the film Mera Naam Joker too was the hot news those days.
Then with the passage of time the news cameramen having no business started to run behind film stars and on poking their noses in others’ personal lives, were manhandled by the stars and the next day papers carried the stories blaming the stars for manhandling the media.(See my article Media misusing the celebrities).
During 2005, the kiss between film stars John Abraham and Bipasha Basu in Zism also remained in the news, the media gave so much publicity to that kiss that readers felt bored with such news. The first kiss on silver screen by Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, too, was a sensational news for the media.
Further, what media wants to prove by hotting this episode when Kiran Majumdar Shaw and Vasundhra Raje Scindia greeting each other with a hug and pouted lips. It’s a matter of shame when the print and electronic media publicise this episode with various titles: Maharani Ka Chumban and Shahi Kiss…so on and so forth. Through such headlines what the media wanted to prove?
Our print as well as electronic media is hungry for the breaking story, either that breaking news has any relevance or not. One newspaper over reacted by comparing the Kiss with Ms Scindia walking the ramp in Jaipur recently, adding that the CM is no staranger to controversies.
The media should join a study class on Kissing; then they will know that air-kissing is common phenomenon at corporate dos and high society parties. Recalling back again, it is perhaps 1990s or so, a gentle lady for Godrez family attended a corporate party perhaps, in blouseless sari, seeing nothing wrong doing of that particular respectable lady the media published the photograph of her while taking her supper and a cameraman of a weekly (published in English and Hindi) has gone too far just for nothing.
I think the newspapers bungled big time with the explanation ater committing the mistake of going ahead with tabloidish humour. And that is why this news should be named as the most bizarre of 2006.
