Tripura CPM leader, seen lying on 'a bed of cash', expelled from party

Samar Acharjee on a bed of cash Agartala:  The CPI(M) has expelled its leader in Tripura who lay on a bed of cash withdrawn from his own bank account to fulfill a long cherished dream. Jogendranagar committee member of the CPI(M) in Agartala, Samar Acharjee, a contractor by profession, was shown lying on bundles of currency notes on television footage. Mr Acharjee was heard in the footage saying, "I have withdrawn 20 lakhs from my bank account and fulfilled my long cherished dream of sleeping on a bed of money."  But more damagingly, the CPI(M) leader said in the telecast last Thursday, "I am not a hypocrite like other party members who depict themselves as proletariat, yet have a huge amount of money." An investigation by the CPM, that runs the government in Tripura headed by Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, famed for his honesty, has revealed that Acharjee himself took the footage on his own mobile phone which was leaked to a television channel by his friend...

Seemandhra students 'missing' from Hyderabad colleges

HYDERABAD: Attendance in Hyderabad's colleges has shown a 25% decline and teachers are blaming it on the ongoing  Seemandhra protests . Students from the two regions pursuing courses in technology and undergraduate colleges in Hyderabad have left for their homes, either due to fear of a backlash in the 'T' region or to participate in the protest which has gripped  coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema . College officials said the drop in attendance started last week after teachers found Seemandhra students 'missing' from the classes. Authorities say about 40% of the students, who study in the city hail from the 13 non-Telangana districts. The numbers are expected to fall further in the coming days, they rued. Predictably, most students who have left for their hometowns have also expressed their anxieties about staying back in the city where resentment towards united  Andhra Pradesh  protests is on the rise. Attendance in colleges owned by 'T' businessmen and polit...

Jagan begins indefinite fast, says will drag Centre to SC over Telangana

YSRCP chief Jaganmohan Reddy had on October 4 said that it was not too late to revoke the Union Cabinet's decision to create a separate Telangana. As part of the protests against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Party (YSRPC) chief Jaganmohan Reddy on Saturday began an indefinite fast. This comes even as the Centre has begun working on a special package to pacify the Seemandhra region. Jagan said that he would challenge the decision of the Centre to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh in the Supreme Court. "We will challenge the Centre's decision (to divide AP) in the Supreme Court," Jagan said at the 'deeksha' camp. Noting that there were "legal problems" involved in the state's division, he wondered how the Centre could find solutions in six weeks. "We are opposing the unilateral manner in which the Centre is functioning. How can it go ahead with the bifurcation process without a resolution in the state Assembly?...

Andhra division: Sonia asks Pallam Raju to 'not act in haste'

HRD minister MM Pallam Raju on October 3  resigned from his post in protest against the Union Cabinet's  approval of the formation of separate Telangana. (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: M M Pallam Raju, who announced his resignation over division of Andhra Pradesh, on October 5 met Congress president Sonia Gandhi who advised him "not to act in haste". This is his second meeting with her in two days after being unhappy over the Centre's decision to create Telangana and his decision to quit as HRD minister. The meeting triggered speculation whether the party was trying to persuade him and other ministers from Seemandhra region not to press their resignation. When he talked to reporters immediately after meeting Gandhi, Raju gave no indication of what he plans to do. "Yesterday, I had decided to resign. So I went to meet her and requested her that I would like to resign from the post of minister but she gave me the same advice that was given ...

US shutdown enters second day; Barack Obama postpones foreign visits

The bitter budget standoff between Democrats and Republicans pushed the US government's shutdown into the second day on October 2 with President Barack Obama postponing his visits to Malaysia and the Philippines in the wake of the crisis that can cost the ailing economy billions. The two parties failed to strike a deal before the October 1 deadline on spending and budget due to differences over 'Obamacare', the signature healthcare programme of President Obama. Obama lambasted the Republicans for being "reckless" in their apparent willingness to take on the government in order to strike down the law overhauling major aspects of health care coverage. He championed the landmark law, signed in 2010, then saw it upheld by the Supreme Court last year. "We know that the longer this shutdown continues, the worse the effects will be. More families will be hurt. More businesses will be harmed," he said yesterday, the first time the government shut dow...

Cabinet withdraws ordinance on lawmakers

PTI Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi leaves 7, Race Course Road after a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on October 2. The Union Cabinet on October 2 unanimously decided to drop a controversial ordinance and bill aimed at protecting convicted lawmakers, days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi publicly denounced the move. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari made the announcement after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who returned late Tuesday after attending the U.N. General Assembly, presided over a 20-minute Cabinet meeting. “The decision of the Cabinet was unanimous,” Mr. Tewari told the media. The ordinance, now with President Pranab Mukherjee, sought to overrule a Supreme Court ruling which wanted convicted MPs and State legislators disqualified from their respective legislatures. “In so far as the bill is concerned, it is the property of parliament,” Mr. Tewari said. He added that at an appropriate time, it would be taken back. The Mi...

Rasheed Masood gets 4 yrs in jail, loses RS seat

Rajya Sabha member Rasheed Masood on October 1 became the first member of Parliament (MP) to be disqualified after a special CBI court sentenced him to four years in jail in a corruption case. On September 19, the court had convicted the Congress leader of fraudulently nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura in medical colleges across the country from the central pool as health minister in 1990. One of the candidates was his nephew.  Masood was the minister of state for health in the VP Singh government between 1990 and 1991. Masood’s conviction and sentencing is the first case after the Supreme Court struck down a provision under which incumbent MPs and MLAs could avoid disqualification till pendency of the appeal against conviction in a higher court. The fate of an ordinance designed to shield convicted lawmakers is uncertain following Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s outright rejection of the move. The Congress came out with a g...

Day One of the US government shutdown: It's still business as usual

WASHINGTON: The sun rose in the East, flights international and domestic are landing, power and water are still flowing through outlets, gas stations, stores, and malls opened, teachers, soldiers, teachers, policemen, firefighters and mailmen continue with their job, and traffic is sailing through lights that work. It is business as usual for the most part on Day One of the US government's shutdown. It is only when you head to the Statue of Liberty or the Smithsonian Museum or various National Parks (''CLOSED''), or call in to check on some government programs or payouts (voicemail), that you feel the first impact of the government shutdown that is expected to get worse the longer it lasts.  Driven by fundamental differences in ideology, including the role of government in people's lives, and political and electoral compulsions, Republicans and Democrats fought each other to a legislative standstill at midnight on Monday. Because they could not agree on appropr...

Dr. Singh said his government may have made “some mistakes” during the last nine years’ of its rule but has done “a lot of good things” which he hoped the “generous” people will take into account while voting. “I sincerely hope all secular forces will combine to face the onslaught of people like Mr Narendra Modi. You will see that will happen when people realize what they are up for,” he told accompanied media persons while returning from a visit to the U.S. He was responding when asked for his comments on the perceived emergence of Mr. Modi in the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
