(PTI photo) HYDERABAD: Just out after 16 months in jail,YSR Congress president YS Jaganmohan Reddy on September 30 sent signals that he was keeping his options open post Lok Sabha elections today and had a word of appreciation for BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.  "I said I am secular. What other secular parties like communists, like Janata Dal (U), would do, I will also do the same. I have my options. I dont think I would be in a hurry. All these options are there for everybody," he told reporters here.  He said he appreciated Modi as an administrator but wanted him to strive for bringing all parties on a secular platform.  "What I want Narendra Modi to do is, I appreciate Modi as an administrator, I want Modi to change this entire system in bringing every

'Framed' Lalu Prasad Yadav will prove innocence in fodder scam case: Digvijay Singh

The RJD chief, who faces a minimum jail term of three years and a maximum of seven years, has now been taken into custody and taken to Ranchi's Birsa Munda Jail. Expressing his sadness over Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav’s conviction in connection with the multi-crore fodder scam on September 30, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said the former will provide evidences of his innocence before a higher court. “I am sad about the fact that Lalu Prasad Yadavji has been found guilty. He has been framed. And, I am hopeful that he will provide evidences in the higher court to prove his innocence,” Singh told media here. “He has been a trusted and an old partner of the Congress Party,” he added. In a major blow to RJD before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Lalu was today convicted by a special CBI court in Ranchi in a fodder scam case that disqualifies him from Parliament and renders him ineligible for contesting elections for at least six years. Narendra Modi doesn't like 'dehati aurat': Khurshid

Slamming Narendra Modi, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid today said the BJP leader's attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the purported "dehati aurat" remark shows that he does not like  village women and likened him to a "parrot" who makes utterances without verifying facts. Khurshid said there is nothing wrong in being a "dehati aurat" (village woman) and Modi is out of touch with ground realities. "Mr Modi does not like 'dehati aurat'. Of course he does not like dehati aurat. Why should we think of a dehati aurat being a pejorative term," he told PTI in an interview in New York. He was reacting to Modi's remarks that Singh had been insulted by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by purportedly comparing him with "dehati aurat" in the context of his voicing concern over cross border terrorism during his meeting with US President Barack Obama. A Pakistani journalist, who first attributed the &

Current account gap widens to 4.9% of GDP during April-June this year

India’s current account deficit (CAD)—the difference between dollar inflows and outflows---stood at 4.9% of GDP or $21.8 billion during April-June this year from 4% or $16.9 billion in the same period of the previous year, data released on September 30 showed. The gap, however, is expected to taper down in the coming quarters aided by a sharp slump in gold imports and a smart rebound in exports amid early signs of recovery in the US and Europe that have boosted shipment orders. Gold imports during April-June this year stood at $16.5 billion, higher by $7.3 billion compared to $9.1 billion worth of inward shipments of the yellow metal during the same quarter of the previous year. “Excluding the increase in gold imports, CAD would work out to $14.5 billion, or about 3.2% of GDP,” the RBI said in its quarterly balance of payments statement. CAD had declined to 3.6% in the January-March quarter after touching a record high of 6.5% in the October-December quarter. Over the p

HC issues notice to Azam Khan on petition by Jat policemen

The Allahabad high court on September 30 issued notice to Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan on a petition filed by policemen belonging to the Jat community who alleged they were transferred out of Muzaffarnagar after the recent communal clashes in that district upon his "orders". Justice Sudhir Agrawal also stayed the impugned transfers "provided they have not already joined at the transferred place" and that the authorities concerned shall, in the meantime, "ensure payment of their salary at Muzaffarnagar but it will be open to them to take work or not". The order was passed on the petition of Pankaj Kumar and 6 others, all of them constables or head constables, who were transferred to "far-off" places like "Chitrakoot, Basti, Banda, Hamirpur and Pratapgarh". The petitioners have alleged that following the riots, "police personnel of a particular community (Jat)" were being shifted "from western part of UP to

Govt doles out sops for minorities in Karnataka in run-up to Lok Sabha polls

September 28, 2013  Bhadrapad Krushnapaksha 8, Kaliyug Varsha 5115 Bangalore (Karnataka) :  Ahead of the  Lok Sabha  elections, the  Congress government  in the state is going on an overdrive to provide job opportunities to  minorities  and backward class by making them stakeholders in tourism, which is perceived to be a sunrise sector. The state cabinet on Thursday gave its nod for extending  Rs 2 lakh loan  for unemployed minorities youths to purchase tourist taxis. Till now, the scheme was only limited to unemployed scheduled caste and scheduled tribe youths. Under the SC/ST special scheme, 50 per cent of the cost of tourist taxi will be borne by the department as financial aid, the remaining 45 per cent of the cost will be given on  loan by the nationalised banks . Only 5 per cent of the cost will be borne by the youths. This will also be extended to minorities to make youths self-sustainable,'' "state law minister T B Jayachandra told reporters after the cabi

'Anti-Hindu' ASI renamed the Shankaracharya Hill to Takht-e-Suleiman

September 28, 2013  Bhadrapad Krushnapaksha 8, Kaliyug Varsha 5115 Shankaracharya Temple, Srinagar According to this Tribune news report, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has summarily renamed the Shankaracharya Hill to Takht-e-Suleiman overlooking the Dal Lake in Srinagar.  If this was not enough, the ASI has also presented a distorted version of the history of the Shankaracharya Hill on the tourist information plaque, a move which has justifiably outraged the Kashmiri Pandits. From that news report:         “It is a matter of great concern that ASI has given the name Takht-e-Suleiman (Throne of Solomon) to it, replacing the earlier plaque. How have they come to this conclusion warrants an answer,” said Predhuman K Joseph Dhar, an expert on ancient Kashmir history. He said recently a European historian visited the place and expressed surprise over information provided to the people. Of course, there is no question that this move is politically motivated because it h

Meerut panchayat to protest BJP leader Sangeet Som's arrest turns violent, 60 arrested

Security personnel at the panchayat in Meerut. Meerut :  A panchayat called in Khera village in Meerut today to protest the arrest of the BJP leader Sangeet Som under the stringent National Security Act turned violent with the villagers clashing with the police.  The police had to resort to lathicharge to control the irate mob, which pelted stones at the policemen and damaged police vehicles. Almost 60 persons have been arrested, says PTI.  The villagers resorted to stone pelting after rumours spread that some women of the village were injured in the police lathicharge. Police fired warning shots in the air and used tear gas to control the mob. Reports say some cops were injured. Despite the prohibitory orders, reports say over 2000 people, including a few local BJP leaders, gathered at a school ground in Khera village to Mr Som's arrest for his alleged involvement in inciting the Muzaffarnagar violence. Mr Som's supporters planned the panchayat less than a month afte

Indo-Pak talks: Please Prime Minister, stop smoking that peace pipe

In 1947, as Pakistani irregular forces raced east towards Srinagar, prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru outlined the strategic challenge that has haunted every Indian leader since. “The invasion of Kashmir”, he observed pithily, “is not an accidental affair resulting from the fanaticism or exuberance of the tribesmen, but a well organised business with the backing of the state”. “We have in effect to deal with a state carrying out an informal war, but nevertheless a war”. Manmohan Singh.   For almost ten years now, Manmohan Singh has pursued a single-minded policy he believed would end that war: a policy which came within a hair’s breadth of succeeding. Yet, as fighting rages along the Line of Control, and terrorism in Kashmir is going through the first year-on-year upswing in a decade, it’s evident that Pakistan’s generals don’t share the prime minister’s dreams.  Later today, as Singh meets with prime minister Nawaz Sharif, the two most powerless leaders either country has had in de

Major row over Nawaz Sharif purportedly calling Manmohan Singh 'village woman'

The controversy has its roots in a comment by a well-known Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir on Geo TV that Sharif had used this description dehati aurat (village woman) during a breakfast meeting with him and NDTV's Barkha Dutt on Saturday while expressing his unhappiness that Singh complained to US President Barack Obama about Sharif on Pakistan. A major controversy erupted on September 29 over Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif purportedly calling his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh a "village woman" with Narendra Modi terming it as the "biggest insult" of the Prime Minister. "How dare you (Sharif) address my nation's Prime Minister as a village woman? There cannot be a bigger insult of the Indian Prime Minister. We can fight with him on policies but this we will not tolerate. This nation of 1.2 billion will not tolerate its Prime Minister's insult," Modi, BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate, said at a huge rally in New Delhi. Th

What stature does Nawaz Sharif have to 'insult' PM, asks Narendra Modi

New Delhi: After Bhopal and Trichy, it was capital's turn to chant Narendra Modi’s name as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate took centrestage on Aeptember 29 for Delhi’s Vikas Rally. However BJP president Rajnath Singh, senior leaders LK Advani and Sushma Swaraj chose to stay away from Gujarat CM's first rally in Delhi after his anointment as party’s face for 2014 polls.  Reaching out to the masses ahead of the 2014 General Elections, Modi reiterated that people of the country must oust the UPA government and rid the country of Congress' divisive rule. He took a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and said that she was the 'happiest CM in India' because she has no work to do other than cutting ribbons.  “Sheila Dikshit has no responsibility but to blame Delhi's problems on Centre or someone else,” Modi said. Tearing into Sheila’s track record, Modi said CWG was not only about money loss but it also robbed us of our future and affected our sportsman s

Nawaz Sharif takes a dig at Manmohan Singh ahead of meeting

Updated:  Sun, Sep 29 2013. 03 44 PM IST New Delhi:  It was billed as a meeting between the Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan aimed at finding ways to re-energise a floundering peace process but queering the pitch just ahead of the talks were news reports that Pakistani Prime Minister  Nawaz Sharif  had likened Prime Minister  Manmohan Singh  to a “village woman.” The meeting between Singh and Sharif—expected over breakfast—expected to give some momentum to the bilateral peace process stalled after the killing of five Indian soldiers along the India-Pakistan border in Kashmir on 6 August. The talks that were restarted in February 2011, after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, had made substantial progress, promoting economic linkages between the two countries. But an attack along the border in January when two Indian soldiers were beheaded reportedly by Pakistani troops and the second incident on 6 August stalled the dialogue process. The run-up to Sunday’s meeting has been rocky. F

Muzaffarnagar communal riots and selective compassion human rights bodies

Do statutory national bodies such as the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) have only cosmetic value, or are they a political tool to help the ruling dispensation at the Centre to harangue or protect State Governments ? In over three weeks since the murder of a Muslim youth for allegedly tormenting a young girl on her way to inter-college at Nangla Mandore in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh on August 27, the retaliatory murders of her two brothers, and the communal violence that followed and took 49 lives, there was not a peep from these august bodies despite so much human suffering and angst. Twenty-three days after the first death, on September 19, after a rattled Chief Minister began looking for ways to cover his inadequacies, NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma arrived at Muzaffarnagar to take stock of the situation. The National Human Rights Commission is still notable for his absence, largely perhaps because it ten
