KJ Alphons to take up Modi’s cause in the US

NEW DELHI: Former IAS officer K J Alphons, who was until recently a CPM-backed member of the Kerala assembly, has decided to take up the cause of Gujarat chief minister  Narendra Modi  in the US. Alphons said he would suggest to President Barack Obama during next month's national breakfast prayer meeting to invite Modi to the US for a dialogue on development.  Alphons, a member of the BJP's national executive, is part of the growing chorus in favour of Modi within BJP, though he didn't spell out if the Gujarat chief minister should be BJP's prime ministerial candidate for 2014.  Alphons is among several invitees to the 61st national breakfast prayer meeting to be held in Washington on February 7. An annual affair, the meeting is attended by the US president, members of the American Congress, diplomats and invitees from more than 130 countries to "share in the spirit of friendship and thanksgiving".  Alphons said if he got the opportunity to have a word with

Allahabad high court seeks probe into identity of man believed to have been Netaji

Netaji ashes at a Tokyo's Renkoji Temple LUCKNOW: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court  on Thursday expressed surprise on the Centre's reluctance in conducting the DNA test of ash kept at Tokyo's Renkoji Temple to set at rest the doubts and controversy, whether the ash is of  Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose  or not. It also put the Centre in the dock for rejecting Justice MK Mukherjee Commission's November 8, 2005 report without assigning any reason, which had found that Netaji had not died in the plane crash and the ashes in Renkoji Temple were not of Netaji.  Amid the belief that   Gumnaami Baba   alias Bhagwanji, who lived in Faizabad at Ram Bhawan was Netaji himself and the fact gained momentum from the articles recovered from his residence after his death on September 18, 1985, the bench has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to constitute a panel of experts to probe into the matter to establish the identity of Gumnaami Baba as to whether he was Net

4 controversies that shook India's Political Dynasties

Bangalore: When politics becomes a family affair, the masses find it hard to invest their trust and aspirations in such political set up. In India politics is almost a family affair, like in case of Nehru-Gandhi regime which has dominated the Congress party since independence.  Such interconnections have worked in many places for the people in India but then there are those who have used and abused the power they are entitled to for their personal advantage.  Here are the four political controversies which shook many of the well established political reigns in recent past in India, as listed by rediff.com The Chautalas The Haryana chief minister, Om Prakash Chautala has served the post four times; however his tenure has ranged from six days to six years. In 1991, he was publicly disowned by his father, late Chaudhary Devi Lal who was a freedom fighter and who also served as the chief minister of Haryana, for allegedly smuggling gold watches worth Rs 100,000 at the Delhi airpor

In Chautala’s old district, teachers search for ways to deal with JBT scam

Bhiwani, Haryana:  The cold reality of prison sentences handed down to 55 government officers and politicians — including INLD chief and former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay — for illegally recruiting over 3000 junior school teachers, has sent a chill down the spine of Haryana’s corrupt. In what came to be commonly referred to as the JBT (Junior Basic Training) recruitment scam, the then Chautala-led government was indicted of receiving money from candidates to fix their selection as junior teachers in 2000. On January 16, a special CBI court concluded a five-year trial holding the conspirators guilty of corruption. Firstpost  visited Bhiwani district, which was Ajay Chautala’s Lok Sabha constituency in 2000 – the year of the JBT recruitment scam. Not surprisingly, Bhiwani became a ‘favoured district’ for selection of candidates for JBT. Days after the stunning verdict that sentenced the guilty, prison terms between 10 and four years, its impact has only

Why Narendra Modi won’t be BJP’s PM candidate in 2014

Narendra Modi is not going to offer himself as BJP candidate for Prime Minister in next year’s election. This will disappoint those who see him as able to transform India. But he is hardly the sort of man who does things because others want him to. This isn’t to say that he doesn’t want to become Prime Minister, or even that he isn’t considering what it would be like to head the campaign — he does and he is. But ultimately, even if he is asked to, he will not be the Prime Ministerial candidate. Modi is not going to project himself as PM candidate: AP Here are my reasons why: The first thing is that he likes to be in total and absolute control of what he does (an example may be found in the third point below). Getting into a battle where the BJP is not in charge of some parts of its organisation and also absent from large parts of the country will worry him. In Karnataka and Rajasthan, for example, the BJP’s issues are Vasundhara Raje and Yeddyurappa . The chari

India wants Modi as PM, Nitish free to take his own position: Yashwant Sinha

Other BJP leaders may have said it in the past, but today one of the senior most leaders in the BJP Yashwant Sinha openly came out in support of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the party’s prime ministerial candidate in the next general elections. “There is a huge demand from our workers that Modi should be projected as the Prime Ministerial candidate and I also feel that if Modi is projected as a PM candidate, then the NDA will be at advantage,” he said. The BJP leader, who was the Finance Minister when the BJP-led NDA alliance was in power, is perhaps the biggest leader to openly endorse the Gujarat Chief Minister’s candidature. Sinha also seemed to be calling the bluff of ally Janata Dal (United) in Bihar, whose chief Nitish Kumar had earlier hinted that he was not in favour of Modi, saying that a secular leader should lead the alliance in the next elections. Saying that every party was an independent entity, Sinha said,”My personal view in the matte

Kamal Haasan to Ashis Nandy: Tragedy of hypersensitive India

A is a rich person married to B, who is another rich person. They have two children, C and D. There is also E, an underage help or a pet animal, who/which is generally ill-treated by the family but particularly likes B. A is in a relationship with a colleague, F, who is a not-so-rich person and lives with G, yet another rich person. F and G are of the same gender and face immense pressure from F’s community which is more intolerant to same-sex relationship than G’s community. It is possible that A and F are also of the same gender or perhaps F started to explore the other gender under stress. Anyway, B eventually comes to know of A’s affair, plots revenge and manages to rope in G who is incensed at the discovery of F’s infidelity. Together, B and G kill A and F in a way that nobody gets suspicious. Afterwards, they draw closer to each other but B does not really like G’s regional accent and G hates B’s unruly children. As B and G fight their guilt and mutual dislike,

Juvenile Justice Board declares sixth Delhi rape accused juvenile

The Juvenile justice board (JJB) has declared the sixth accused in Delhi gangrape case as a juvenile. In the last hearing on 15 January, the headmaster of the school when the accused was a student and the current headmaster, both appeared before the JJB. They submitted a copy of the school register, the only existing document in support of the age of the accused, which shows him to be a minor as of 16 December, 2012- which is the day of the brutal gangrape in Delhi in which he is a co- accused. The JJB also recorded the statement of the headmaster. Juvenile offenders are tried under the Juvenile Justice (care and protection) Act, 2000. The Act defines a juvenile as a person who is below 18 years of age. A juvenile offender cannot be sentenced to life imprisonment or capital punishment under the law. For petty crimes, he is sent to an observation home. If found guilty for committing crimes of heinous nature, he can be sent to an institution called the ‘place of saf

Nightclub fire kills at least 232 in Brazil

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (Reuters) - A fire in a nightclub killed at least 232 people in southern Brazil on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked and overcrowded exits in the ensuing panic, officials said. The blaze in the university town of Santa Maria was started by a band member or someone from its production team igniting a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling, said Luiza Sousa, a civil police official. The fire spread "in seconds," she said. Local fire officials said at least one exit was locked and that bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling. The vast majority of the victims, most of them university students, died from asphyxiation, officials said. Others we

Unpleasant truths about Rahul

Rahul is around the age when John F. Kennedy was already running the world in those hard times of the Cold War. Rahul Gandhi t's official now. Rahul Gandhi has finally declared that he is ready to take the plunge — to fulfil his destiny as heir to the monarchic democracy of India. His statement of 19 July that he would play a more proactive role in the party and the government, though its timing would be decided by the leadership (meaning his mother and her advisors), smacked of an attitude that he had decided to make this great sacrifice for the greater good of his party and of the Indian people. Much like the sacrifice his mother made by self-abnegation of the Prime Ministership of India in 2004. Salman Khurshid, a spokesman and confidant of the Gandhi family, has bluntly and quite authoritatively stated that Rahul Gandhi will under no circumstances play Number Two — a message for the nth time clearly meant for the
